Pune’s citizens have been fighting to save Vetal Tekdi, the city’s lungs and a popular open space, from being destroyed for developmental projects. Realising the importance of nature in a rapidly expanding city, a coalition of citizens and groups have vigorously campaigned, used the Right to Information, nature trails, posters and street plays to mobilise support to save the tekdi and halt the Balbharti-Paud Phata Link Road project which will cut through the green zone. Pune’s municipal corporation seems hell-bent on this project while the activists, citing its reports, are firmly standing by the hill.
