People, planet, justice: Understanding and countering nature crime

Summary

This report from the World Resources Institute (WRI) examines five major categories of nature crime and their frequent overlap with other illicit activities such as corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, narcotics and arms trafficking, human rights abuses and violence against land and environmental defenders. It highlights how these interconnected crimes undermine governance, justice, and environmental sustainability.

To tackle these, the report identifies five priority strategies: Strengthening legal frameworks and enforcement at national and international levels; targeting the financial crimes and corruption that enable nature crime; safeguarding the rights of workers, indigenous people, and rural communities while supporting civil society; fostering multi-sector approaches; and harnessing innovative tools and technologies. By positioning nature crime within broader criminal and governance challenges, it urges coordinated action from governments, donors, and civil society to reduce harm to ecosystems, protect vulnerable communities, and advance justice.
