Question of Cities wins Laadli Media Awards 2023

Question of Cities, India’s online journal on cities, made its debut at prestigious professional awards this past weekend.

Jashvitha Dhagey, multimedia journalist and researcher, won the Laadli Media Award 2023 for her story ‘Wanted: Safe and affordable housing for women’ published in October 2022. Dhagey spoke to working women in cities about the piquant situations and challenges they face while looking for a house to rent.

The women that Dhagey spoke to, faced moral policing, casual sexism and, discrimination because of marital status, among concerns of their own safety. This limits the number of housing options these women living alone in cities have. This, however, does not have to be the norm. She writes that providing safe, affordable and inclusive housing can go a long way in making women more comfortable in their workforce roles. Read the essay here.

Jashvitha Dhagey and Dnyaneshwari Burghate received the Jury appreciation citation for their photo essay ‘The rural in the urban: Warli women of Mumbai’s National Park’ published in July 2022 Dhagey and Burghate visited the adivasi padas that lie inside the only forest inside a city to document the lives and struggles of the women.

They deal with the fast-paced urban chaos in the form of their jobs and education, and return to their quiet space among dense trees and wildlife, because to them, that is life. Battling the lack of amenities and an encroaching State, the Warli women have begun fighting for their land and their rights – their lives. See the photo essay here.
